I have never tried to phone the Queen.  I don’t expect it would be easy to get through.  If it would be hard to get through the Buckingham Palace switchboard, how could we ever get through into the heavenly throne room to speak to God?  Prayer is impossible!  At least it would be if God had not taken the initiative to open the way for us to gain a guaranteed hearing.  I want to help us grasp how the living and true God has made it possible.

As we begin, we need to remember that the God of the Bible always operates in three distinct persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Each of the three persons has a crucial role in making prayer possible.

We pray to God the Father.  Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Our Father…”   Believers are adopted as God’s children.  His Fatherhood is our source of security and confidence in prayer.  But how have we been adopted into God’s family?

We pray through God the Son, Jesus Christ.  God the Son became our brother when he was born at Bethlehem.  Later, he died for us to open the way to his Father.  Now raised. He has gone into his Father’s presence to represent us.  He’s there right now!  This is why Christians often end their prayers with the words, “In Jesus’ name”.  We are stating the basis on which we expect to be heard: we come to the Father through his uniquely qualified Son.  But how can we connect to Jesus in heaven, and through him to the Father?

We pray in the power of the Holy Spirit.  God’s unseen Spirit lives within each believer, and we must ask for his help in prayer.   He turns our muddled, half-formed stammers into prayers that arrive perfect in the Father’s presence.

The way we pray to God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – Is shaped by his nature as Trinity.  As Paul put it in Ephesians 2:18 “Through Jesus, we have access to the Father by one Spirit”.  Just thinking about that privilege inspires us to make joyful, bold and frequent use of it.
